The Florida Hope Scheme - A Brazen Political Crime

Florida’s own attorney general, James Uthmeier, is accused of running a taxpayer heist for which there has been no accountability. A grand jury found Ron DeSantis's administration diverted $10 million in Medicaid settlement money through a charity tied to First Lady Casey DeSantis and into a political committee controlled by Uthmeier. At the time, Uthmeier was serving as DeSantis's chief of staff, and DeSantis made him attorney general mere months later. That committee funneled the money into the fight against last November's ballot measure to legalize recreational marijuana, and most of it was later rerouted into the Republican Party of Florida's bank account. Then-Attorney General Ashley Moody, whose office signed off on the settlement, was found by the grand jury to have failed to exercise due diligence to ensure tax dollars were not being misappropriated.

No one has been charged. Both Uthmeier and Moody are now on the ballot this November, with Uthmeier running against Jose Javier Rodriguez, who has said “this may well be the most brazen act of political corruption we have seen here in Florida.”

State Representative Kelly Skidmore will help us understand what comes next. She represents House District 92, covering Boca Raton, and currently serves as the House's Minority Policy Chair. As the incumbent in her own race this November, she will speak to constituents​, followed by a Q&A.
