“Dictators: Birds of a Feather,” was created as a response to what the artist describes as a political moment where abuses of power that once shocked the public conscience are increasing.
At a recent protest, we met independent visual artist Anne Deon, who is working to bring a powerful piece of political art into the public sphere here in South Florida.
Anne is raising funds to put up a 14’ x 27’ two-sided billboard featuring her painting along the I-95 corridor in South Florida, where tens of thousands of drivers will see it daily.
Anne’s work, “Dictators: Birds of a Feather,” was created as a response to what she describes as a political moment where abuses of power that once shocked the public conscience are increasingly normalized.
Rather than keeping the work confined to galleries, Deon designed the piece specifically for public spaces, highways, billboards, and shared civic surfaces, places where art has historically played a role in shaping collective awareness.

The image brings together historical and contemporary figures associated with authoritarian power. Through symbolism and stark visual contrast, the work asks viewers to confront uncomfortable parallels and question how power is remembered, justified, and challenged.
According to Deon, the goal is not passive viewing.
It is meant to provoke conversation, discomfort, and scrutiny, the same way protest art has done throughout history. Placement research is complete and vendor availability has been identified.

Public art has always played a role in movements for accountability and democracy. Projects like this bring those conversations directly into the spaces we share every day.
